Toc\u00f3 con algunos artistas conocidos hasta que termin\u00f3 por formar su propia banda. Hasta aqu\u00ed no hay nada de excepcional en la historia.<br \/>\nTodo empez\u00f3 cuando un d\u00eda Chapman se dio cuenta de que si pulsaba las cuerdas con un movimiento seco consegu\u00eda que estas vibraran y sonaran.<br \/>\nBueno, no es gran cosa. Golpeas una cuerda y suena, \u00bfy qu\u00e9?<br \/>\nEl m\u00e9rito de Chapman fue darse cuenta de que de ese modo no necesitaba su mano derecha para tocar. As\u00ed pues si no usas la mano derecha \u00bfpor qu\u00e9 no percutir tambi\u00e9n las cuerdas con la mano derecha?<br \/>\nLas perspectivas y posibilidades que se abrieron ante \u00e9l fueron enormes ya que en resumen permit\u00eda hacer b\u00e1sicamente lo mismo que hace un pianista pero con una guitarra. Podr\u00eda usar una mano para hacer un acompa\u00f1amiento y la otra mano para tocar la melod\u00eda.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1140\" style=\"width: 222px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1140\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1140 \" src=\"https:\/\/euterpesspiritus.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/emmett_chapman_free_hands-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1140\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chapman y su m\u00e9todo &#39;Free Hands&#39;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Chapman desarroll\u00f3 esta t\u00e9cnica, a la que llam\u00f3 <em>free hands<\/em> (manos libres). Lleg\u00f3 a publicar un m\u00e9todo donde recog\u00eda todos sus conocimientos acumulados titulado <em>Free Hands: A New Discipline of Fingers on Strings<\/em>.<br \/>\nStanley Jordan, de quien ya se ha hablado en este blog ser\u00eda el ejemplo m\u00e1s popular de este modo de tocar la guitarra.<br \/>\nSin embargo Chapman pronto se dio cuenta que una guitarra convencional limitaba las posibilidades de su t\u00e9cnica y decidi\u00f3 innovar hasta el punto de crear un instrumento que no exist\u00eda.<br \/>\nEn esencia lo que hizo fue colocar las cuerdas de un bajo el\u00e9ctrico junto a las cuerdas de una guitarra en un m\u00e1stil lo suficientemente ancho para acomodar holgadamente todas esas cuerdas. Tambi\u00e9n suprimi\u00f3 el cuerpo de la guitarra\/bajo porque con ese modo de tocar ya no ten\u00eda ninguna utilidad. As\u00ed que finalmente se qued\u00f3 con un palo largo y ancho, por decirlo de un modo coloquial. No es de extra\u00f1ar pues que el nuevo instrumento fuera bautizado con el nombre de\u00a0<em>The Stick<\/em> (el palo).<\/p>\n<p>El primer stick fue fabricado en 1974 y Chapman adem\u00e1s de m\u00fasico de convirti\u00f3 en empresario al decidir fabricar y comercializar el reci\u00e9n nacido instrumento. El modelo m\u00e1s habitual tiene 10 cuerdas, aunque hay tambi\u00e9n de 8 y de 12.<br \/>\nEl m\u00e1stil y por tanto tambi\u00e9n las cuerdas son ostensiblemente m\u00e1s largas que las de las guitarras y bajos convencionales.<br \/>\nEn la parte izquierda del m\u00e1stil (la que queda m\u00e1s cercana al m\u00fasico) se colocan las cuerdas de bajo. En una escena de la pel\u00edcula <em>Dune<\/em> uno de los protagonistas tocaba un\u00a0<em>baliset<\/em> un instrumento ficticio de la mitolog\u00eda de la obra de Frank Herbert. Para ello se pens\u00f3 en utilizar un stick, convenientemente <em>disfrazado<\/em> para dar el pego.<br \/>\nLa escena se lleg\u00f3 a rodar pero se elimin\u00f3 finalmente en la versi\u00f3n comercial. M\u00e1s tarde se volvi\u00f3 a incluir en la versi\u00f3n extendida.<br \/>\nAqu\u00ed pod\u00e9is como el Capit\u00e1n Picard&#8230; bueno, Patrick Stewart en el papel de Guerny Halleck toca el\u00a0<em>baliset-stick<\/em>.
