This was our longest recording session to date...running from 8 am to 3 am. The students recorded Painkiller from 2 pm to 4 pm. Judas Priest's "Painkiller" is by far the most challenging song my students have covered. At the studio we decided to not record the song using a metronome...instead opting to have the song groove a little bit and get a more natural performance from the students. And for the credit sequence, we recorded Judas Priest's "Cathedral Spires". Thunder: Kala Scarpinski and Auggie Huber...Age 11 Lead Vocals: Noah Stubenrauch...Age 11 Drums: Tyler Rogers...Age 13 Rhythm Guitar: Drew Lowry...Age 14 Bass: Aidan Higgins...Age 15 Credit Sequence Vocalist: Emily Leavengood...Age 16 Acoustic Guitarists: Robert Doughty and Nathan Clevenger...Age 16 Lead Guitar: Joe Hubbell...Age 17 The vocals were recorded using a vintage AKG C12 microphone. Because we had to record 8 songs in a single day with 48 students, we had to save on setup time and record the electric guitars direct. Joe Hubbell used a Digitech RP500 and Drew Lowry used a Vox Tonelab SE. The bass was recorded direct and we used DW drums. This recording session was definitely a big production and wouldn't have been possible without the following people: I have to first thank Dan Agee for an incredible mix. Dan is the most talented musician and mixing engineer I know. With him on our projects, I always feel like the students' tracks are in good hands. Steve Nagasaki, for mastering the song. It's great to have someone as talented as Steve to get a fresh perspective on a song. For all your mastering needs: www.nagasakisound.com Brian Anderson, Josh Cole and Morgan Asher...what can I say, these guys worked 24 hours straight and took care of business. They made the trip enjoyable and successful. I can't thank them enough!!! Tom and Nick Inglin for their fantastic photos which were used in the credit sequence of the video. Todd Tidwell and Aaron Kasdorf, the engineers who kept the session relaxed and productive despite the long hours. The students can't wait to work with them again. And of course to all the parents for making this trip possible. My students are very lucky to have parents who are so supportive. Note: I am looking for cameramen, photographers, lighting crew and video editors to help out on future projects. The amount of work to create these videos is daunting, so any help would greatly appreciated. Please contact me if you are interested in getting involved (we do have money in our budget for these services). In order to get multiple camera angles I had the students record the song using a click track. Not only did using the click track help create a better video, but many professional recordings are laid down to a click track. Many viewers might wonder why the students aren't jumping around and delivering a great visual performance as well. Playing along with the click track requires a great deal of concentration, so that wouldn't possible for many musicians, especially a bunch of kids....in this case students ranging in age from 13 to 16. The guitars were recorded with a Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier and a Marshall head. The speaker cabinets were two 4x12 Shawnee cabinets and were mic'd with a set of Royers. In order to make the screaming vocals thicker we double tracked them. One track used the Neumann U87 that appears in the video. And the other track was simply an Shure SM58. Many viewers may doubt that a 14 year can sound like this. Granted, doubletracking the vocals made them more intense. But Blake honestly can make his voice sound like this. By using a dynamic microphone, cupping it and getting very close (techniques used by metal singers the world over), he can pull off songs that contain intense screaming vocals. In retrospect, we should have filmed him doing this in the studio instead of using the Neuman U87. I was worried that the singing portions of the song would contain too many plosives and sibilance if we used some of the techniques described above. We attempted to mix the song just like the original recording. All of the effects, levels, etc... are based on the original version. The audio has some crackling it in which occurs when I upload it to YouTube. If you listen to the video on decent speakers you'll hear it. Eventually, I'll have the mp3 available on my website for free. We videotaped the performance using two Panasonic AG-HVX200 DVCPRO's.
